Yes.
Intellectual property can be bought and sold. The sale of intellectual property is known as an assignment. Typically the parties to an intellectual property assignment enter into a written contract.
In some countries, a written contract, signed by all parties, is necessary to assign intellectual property. Check the rules that apply in your country.
RECOUP YOUR INVESTMENT
It takes time, money and creative talents to secure intellectual property rights. Sometimes tens of thousands of dollars are spent to secure registration, but then, for whatever reason, you cannot reap the benefits of that investment.
Selling an unused intellectual property asset is a way of recouping your investment in obtaining a registration.
Don’t let all your effort go to waste. Instead, sell your intellectual property asset, to gain back the money spent in obtaining registration plus extra money to make it worth your while.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
When you sell or assign an intellectual property right (or an idea) it is normally sold for a fixed price. You give up ownership of the intellectual property right in return for that price.
Upon sale the buyer, normally, assumes all of the risks of that intellectual property right. That means that when you sell, you do not assume any risks in what happens after the sale.
If the buyer does not make the idea a success, you still keep the funds obtained from the sale.
It also means that you do not need to wait for the buyer to make the idea a success to obtain funds and you are not waiting for the royalty cheques to arrive.
FULL OR PARTIAL SALES
One of the powerful things about selling intellectual property rights, is the ability to retain some ownership whilst selling other parts.
Assignment of intellectual property rights can be partial. That means you can “split” the right and sell only parts of it.
You might want to sell only some classes of a trade mark, but retain some for yourself. Alternatively, you might sell one of your patents in one field or industry, but keep all other industries for yourself.
Think of it like selling the rind of an orange, but getting to eat and enjoy the juicy orange yourself.
This is the power of sales. You can have your cake and eat it too.
SALE BASED ON INDUSTRY SCOPE – PATENT
Bob is a successful doctor who has invented a device which allows him to inject patients without pain. Bob is also an animal lover and knows that his invention would work well on animals.
He joins Ipleft and lists his patent for sale. He attracts a buyer who will only use the invention only in the veterinary industry. This allows Bob to continue to use the invention in human treatment.
In return, Bob is paid a fixed amount of money.
Bob considered licensing the invention instead of selling it. But he does not want to have to deal with the administration of a license. So selling it suits him well.
Bob can continue doing what he is doing, and has recouped all of the money he spent on obtaining a patent.
From the sale, Bob also has a nice nest egg and enough for a very nice family holiday – a pet friendly holiday of course.
SERIAL INVENTOR
Scott is a serial inventor. He is an “ideas” man and loves nothing more than creating things. Scott can make just about anything and is the happiest when he is in his workshop building something.
Scott loves showing off his inventions and seeing people’s reactions. The beauty for him is getting things working. Once he gets them working he moves onto his next big project.
Scott has invented a way to measure stairs and to easily make sure they are compliant will all the local laws in terms of tread depth and height. Who would have thought that stairs could be so complicated.
Having been down this road before, Scott obtains patents on what he invents. He first files them locally and then, when it comes time, files them in all the larger countries around the world. He then sells the world wide rights to his invention, so someone can take the invention world wide.
Scott obtains patents because he understands the value of what he creates. He respects his own genius.
But Scott does not want to sell any of the products he makes, he just loves inventing them. For that reason Scott puts advertisement on Ipleft to sell the patents all around the world. He places listings for all the countries in which he has a patent and also links those listings (through related listings) so others know there is a family of patents available for purchase.
